The ventral tegmental area (VTA) and substantia nigra (SN) have a crucial role in reward and motivation. To better understand how these two brain regions process information, a computational model of the VTA-SN system is necessary. A computational model of the VTA-SN system is presented in this paper. The model is comprised of three interconnected components: (1) a model of the projection neurons, (2) a network model of the inhibitory interneurons, and (3) a sequential circuit model of the organization of the VTA and SN. The model includes neurons based on the morphological and electrophysiological data from the brain, and is designed to demonstrate the working of the VTA-SN system. The first two components of the model are elaborated and developed, and then the results from the model are compared to the in vivo electrophysiology and immunohistochemistry experiments performed on the VTA and SN. The neuronal model of the VTA and SN shows that the VTA and SN present differences in their overall synaptic connections. Moreover, the model demonstrates the ability of the VTA and SN to reward processing.
